For some of you, it just won’t do to use an instant

. You might want more meaning to that name. There are many different ways to achieve that.

Some people use world languages to enhance their medieval fantasy name. Latin and Greek are quite popular for sourcing beautiful words to create interesting names. On World of Legends, The Night God, Tenebria was Latin inspired, from the word tenebrous, meaning dark.

Here on World of Legends, our Ruler of Eldathren, Arasne Anagonye, has crafted an incredible language for the elves. This is known as Eldalair. Some have taken to using this language to inspire their character names.
There are characters on site using Eldalair, such as Enellena Syr Ketla'Errael who worked with Queen Arasne on the translations for the name. An Eldalair inspired name meaning “Essence of the Springwater”.

Jobs and Titles

In history it was known to form surnames based on jobs or earned titles. If your surname was Smith, Miller or Cooper then likely your family were blacksmiths, mill workers or barrel makers. This naming style is very accessible for characters in World of Legends.

Title based names can come from many sources. Some are simply named by the place or time they were born. Mooncrest marks a child born under a crescent moon. Hornridge is the farmland Karanda Hornridge grew up on.
Of course, more earned titles are common amongst noble families. Bronzeblood comes from the 3rd born child to a noble family, possibly a ruling family with heirs to the throne. Ironheart might suit a family of a war hero, the opportunities are vast.

External Inspiration

A common naming practice is stitching together the names of places, famous people or fictional characters. Fans of medieval fantasy might borrow or alter names of their favourite characters and places. Elder Scrolls fans might become Breylena Dawnstar. Lord of the Rings fans could create Merry Belfalas. Game of Thrones inspires names such as Jon Hightower and Rhaeyna Winterfell.
Note: Be careful with this type of naming however. On World of Legends, you are NOT allowed to roleplay as a pre-existing character from a book, film, TV show or video game. See the site rules for more info.

Real world inspirations and history are a great source. Famous figures of ancient times such as Julius, Circe, Ptolemy have sprung up in character building situations. If you followed our blog earlier this week, the Goddess Lemuria is so named from the myth of the lost continent of Lemuria. Lorelei in the real world is a large slate of rock near the River Rhine in Germany.
