Real World Mythology

Mesoamerican Mythology

The

winged serpent

originates from the Mesoamerican ancient religions. In the mythology of the Aztecs and Mayan civilizations, it was better known as the Feathered Serpent and was seen as a deity going by many names for different groups. The Aztecs called the

winged serpent

Quetzalcoatl, while the Yucatec Mayans and K'iche' Mayan people named them Kukulkan, Q'uq'umatz and Tohil.

The mythology behind Quetzalcoatl depicted the

winged serpent

as a deity for culture, literature, the wind and the sun for the Aztec people. He was renowned as a patron god wearing ehēcacōzcatl, a breastplate jewel featuring a spiral patterned conch shell. It is suspected the pattern resembled wind storms and whirlpools, powers of the elements which carried great significance in mythology for the Aztecs. Qʼuqʼumatz of the K'iche Mayan mythology appears to be of similar origins to Quetzalcoatl.

Attributes of the feathered or

winged serpent

also appear in the mythology of Kukulkan and Tohil, deities of Mayan cultures. Not much is known of Kukulkan but Tohil is said to be the god of fire and war for the K'iche Mayan.

There are art works found across ancient sites of Mesoamerica that resemble these feathered serpents and there was even a temple pyramid devoted to them, found in central Mexico today.

European Heraldry

Winged serpent

s were found across numerous crests and sigils throughout noble European families. They were called Amphipteres. They had bat-like feathery wings with light colours and beautiful green bodies. The House of Potier of ancient France were known to have used two Amphipteres on their heraldry.

Greek Mythology

In Greek Mythology there was a serpent or dragon figure called the Jaculus. This jaculus was interpreted in different ways but quite often appeared as a

winged serpent

. The mythology tells of the jaculus hiding in trees to jump out at victims and gaining the nickname 'javelin-snake' due to the speed at which it darted from the trees.

winged serpent

Winged serpent

s sport 2 feathery wings that are 50 centimetres in length and have iridescent colours that change under the light.

Winged Serpent

s are venomous but mainly hunt small animals they find in the desert and Akasuna coast. Their bite is dangerous to humans though an antidote is easily sourced and very few have died from winged serpent bites.

It is rare to see a winged serpent on the ground, instead choosing to fly around rocks and trees, always moving. They are not too common to find across Akasuna but travellers are astounded by their beauty.

Winged Serpent

Encounters and Sightings

Rafail Mellilis - "Well I don't know my reaction to flying snakes; snakes are terrifying. And so gross. But I think a winged snake is cool because of its wings . Anything that has wings is cool in my opinion. But snakes aren't cool."

Enellena Syr Ketla'Errael - "A winged serpent often visits the oasis near my village. We believe she is the same one who visits for years, choosing the fresh water to drink and cooling down its beautiful scales. You should see how the colours reflect against the water, it's like seeing a mirage. We have an agreement in the village to leave her in peace when she visits and some even leave her some rodents as a treat. I do think she has come to respect the village and see it as a safe place to rest momentarily before taking off to the skies again."
