Real World Hydra Mythology
There are a few differences in the mythology of the
Hydra Dragon
in the real world compared to World of Legends’ version. Within the real world, in both Greek and Roman mythology, it earned the formal title of the Lernaean Hydra and the Hydra of Lerna. Informally it’s typically known as a Hydra
.
Typically described as a serpentine monster that inhabits the lake of Lerna in the Argolid; the site of the myth of Danaïdes. In canonical Hydra myth, the monster was defeated by Hercules (or Heracles in Greek) as part of the second of his Twelve Labours.
Development of the Hydra Myth
The oldest surviving Hydra narrative appears in Hesiod’s Theogony, though the oldest images of the monster can be found on a pair of bronze fibulae dating to 700 BC. From both sources the Hydra myth was already present; a multi-headed serpent, slain by Hercules and Iolaus.
The fibulae portray a six-headed Hydra, however the number of heads was first fixed in writing by Alcaeus, who had given it nine heads. A century later, Simonides increased the number to fifty, while Euripides, Virgil and others didn’t give an exact number.
Similar to the initial number of heads, the Hydra’s capacity to regenerate lost heads varies with time and author. The first mention of the monster’s ability happens with Euripides, where it grew back a pair of heads for each one severed by Hercules.
Hydra Dragon Mythology in World of Legends
The Hydra
serpent has become a staple of inspiration for World of Legend’s version of the creature. While they may have features similar to serpent-like, they are more described as dragons with four limbs, no wings, but way too many necks and heads, usually seven but can be more or less.
They inhabit the northern area of the vast Lake Lin in Braitheld - alongside the Leviathan - but also inhabit the Avalon River sometimes. Hydras are dragons that have mixed habitats; they have the ability to live on both land and underwater.
They are extremely venomous, with venom glands that secretes within their mouth. One bite can be lethal as their venom is the most potent known to man; it’s necrotic venom, causing the death of tissues as soon as it comes into contact. It’s apparent that these dragons don’t use elemental magic or have no abilities to manipulate it to our knowledge. The only knowledge we are aware of are their destructive ones.
Thankfully, these dragons are incredibly rare, especially considering how ferocious they are to human-type beings. They are very hard to see, as the latest recorded sighting of a Hydra Dragon
was close to the Avalon river around 140 years ago.
