Wereboar

Werebeasts Comparison

Wereboar

s in World of Legends are not the shape changing kind, they get their name from their ability to stand on their hind legs.

Werewolves

Werewolves are a cursed mortal that transform into bestial-wolves at the turn of a pale full moon. The mythology of werewolves originates from ancient Greece and Rome. They are known to be affiliated with Lycanthropy.

There are a few known Werewolves found in World of Legends, granted through the unique Status system. It is not possible to contract lycanthropy from another werewolf in Isilendor.

In some media, werewolves can infect other people with lycanthropy through their bite. Many stories change this narrative though the bite usually remains constant.

Werebear

It is theorised in Norse Mythology, Sami practices and Saxon folklore that bear shapeshifters once walked among the people. These beliefs are not as widely known and the term "werebear" was not likely used. Bear shapeshifters largely have a spiritual history amongst the Sami of Lapland and Russia. Sami shamans were believed to be possessed by the spirit of the bear and bestowed great strength.

There is a folktale in Denmark of Bjorn, a man who was transformed into a bear. He could only transform into a human at night, when a woman visited his home.

Werehyena

There are many werebeasts in African folklore, one includes the werehyena. The story originates from the Horn of Africa, including Ethiopia, Somalia and Sudan. The village of Atuga is best known for the tales of shapeshifters that transform into ferocious hyenas to prey on children who wander away at night.

In Other Media

Dungeons and Dragons

Wereboars feature as a shapechanging humanoid in the Forgotten Realms. They are highly rare lycanthrope beasts that change into huge boars. They are solitary creatures that prefer to live in remote camps or homesteads. However, they are quite volatile and can become a great threat when provoked. They were thought to be a hoax or mythological but the wereboars have been witnessed by adventurers.

Wereboar

Mythology in World of Legends

The following is an extract from Navarre Elamoira book, "Eyes of the Wilds: Book Two (Braitheld)":
-Entry by Morrigan Darkwaters-

"Many creatures live in the forests on the slopes of the Caeraig Mountains, some more dangerous than others. One of these is the

Wereboar

. As the name suggests,

Wereboar

s are related to the regular boars that can be found normally in Braitheld and Delvheim, but they can be very easily set apart from their mundane cousins, as they are much bigger in size and can be frequently spotted walking on their hind legs.

They are incredibly strong animals and, while they are technically omnivores, they will prefer meat over other options, and thus are dangerous predators. Usually, they will hunt big herbivores such as deers, that can be very easily found in the mountains, and to do so, they will run on their four legs, as they are much faster and agile.

While they don’t seem to have a taste for human flesh, they are known to attack careless humans. In fact, wereboars are highly territorial, and ignoring the signs of entering their area will almost certainly cause them to attack you on sight. One of the most clear signs that you are entering a

Wereboar

’s territory is deep scratches on the tree bark.

Despite their strength and the danger they can pose to unprepared humans, their thick and deep brown fur is highly prized in Braitheld, and in past times it could be spotted on the shoulders of many town chiefs on the mountains."
