South African Folklore

Grootslang

is an Afrikaans word meaning "Great Serpent." They originate in folklore of South Africa, detailing an enormous primaeval snake. The

Grootslang

is said to be found deep within a cave in the remote reaches of Richtersveld, the Northern Cape province. Various mythology and legends describe the cave as the Bottomless Pit or Wonder Hole.

It is believed that the indigenous Khoekoen people may have originally coined the legend. The Khoekoen words for Grootslang are Kiman, Koo-be-eng and Kou-teign-koo-rou.

Rock paintings discovered around South Africa depict creatures like the Grootslang. A painting found at Cathedral Peak represents a large horned snake. More paintings of mythical serpents were discovered in Brakfontein Ridge and Vulture Peak.

Eye Witness Account

The following is an account from Delvheim miner, Rheymond Lethsic who claims to have seen a Groostland:

"In the heart of the Delvheim mountain mines, where the veins of precious ores ran deep and the echoes of pickaxes filled the air, I toiled alongside my fellow dwarven miners. For generations, my kin had delved into the earth, extracting its treasures with skill and determination, but nothing could have prepared me for what I would encounter deep within those dark, labyrinthine tunnels.

It was a routine excavation, or so I thought, as I hammered away at the stubborn rock, my muscles straining with the effort. But then, a faint tremor rippled through the ground, sending a shiver down my spine. At first, I brushed it off as merely the earth's natural movements, but as the vibrations grew stronger, I knew something was amiss.

As I cautiously made my way deeper into the mines, my lantern casting a feeble glow upon the rough walls, I stumbled upon a sight that would haunt me for the rest of my days—a

Grootslang

, ancient and fearsome, its massive form coiled in the shadows.

My heart pounded in my chest as I beheld the creature, its eyes gleaming with a primal intelligence that sent a chill down my spine. In that moment, all thoughts of ore and riches fled from my mind, replaced by a deep-seated fear unlike anything I had ever known.

But even as terror threatened to overwhelm me, a sense of awe took hold, for I knew that I stood in the presence of something truly extraordinary. And as the Grootslang slithered away into the darkness, leaving me shaken but unharmed, I couldn't help but marvel at the wonders that lay hidden beneath the earth's surface, waiting to be discovered by those brave enough to seek them out."
