Cat Sith

Celtic Mythology

The

Cat Sith

is a prominent entity from Celtic mythology, primarily originating from Scotland. In Scots Gaelic or Gàidhlig, the Cat Sith is known as Cait-shìth (pronounced 'cat-shee'). The Cat Sith is said to be part of the faerie or spirit world and can wield abilities of the supernatural. They appear as a particularly large housecat with a black fur coat and white mark on its chest. To add to their supernatural origins, the Cat Sith are known to have glowing eyes that can be seen in the dark nights.

Cat Sith were commonly believed to be a witch transformed into a cat. The witch could only transform into the cat a total of nine times in their entire life. The nine transformations is potentially the origin of the phrase "cats have nine lives."

During the Celtic festival of Samhain (now known as Halloween), the Cat Sith were believed to cross into the mortal world while the veil between the living and the dead was thinnest. The same may be true for Bealtaine, the Celtic festival to welcome in the summer. Traditionally, people would leave milk out for the Cat Sith, an offering to receive favour from the creature. Failing to offer the milk could curse the cows of those families.

Cat Sith were also believed to have the ability to steal souls before they passed on to the Other world, where the gods resided. Catnapping and loud noises were used to distract and deter the Cat Sith from claiming their deceased family member's soul.

The

Cat Sith

is the 'King of Cats'.

Irish mythology have rare appearances of the Cait Sidhe, while Welsh mythology have a similar creature known as Cath Palug

In Other Media

Dungeons and Dragons

Cat Sith

appear as a potential foe in Dungeons and Dragons. In the Forgotten Realms lore, they a dwarven shapeshifters and can grow to the size of a male dwarf. They have yellow glowing eyes, black fur and the signature white chest patch but they often appear more humanoid than cat shaped. Cat Sith may appear on the path of adventures when crossing mountainous landscapes, misty moors or dense forests. The darkness is their ally as the Cat Sith is capable of blending into the surroundings. They can often be found around sacred spaces and burial grounds.

Final Fantasy VII

The video game, Final Fantasy VII adopts the idea of the

Cat Sith

in the form of a robotic cat. The cat carries a megaphone and rides a moogle (bat-like monsters), commanding the moogle as they go. The Cat Sith is an enemy character, originally working as a fortune-teller and allied with Cloud Strife.

Cat Sith

Existence in World of Legends

The following is a comment from The Beast Tamer:

"They say to come across a black cat is an ill omen, but to own one brings you luck. It is no easy task to befriend the King of Cats, the black spectral creature that struts through the wild highlands. It is strange how your problems seemingly melt away in the companionship of a fickle feline..."

Cat Sith are a companion to the Night Lord, Tenebria.
