Magical Masters:

Warlock

What is a Warlock?

A

Warlock

in World of Legends is another term for a witch, someone who dabbles in witchcraft and typically known to branch into the Dark Arts. Warlocks are frowned upon and usually linked with superstitions, curses and the infernal. Warlocks don't only choose infernal patrons, they can bind their soul to other beings, sometimes binding to Celestials or Fey. Warlocks who bind their souls to gods, are usually referred to as clerics or priests. There is not much known about the infernal in Isilendor but Warlocks that frequent the Dark Arts are said to sell their soul in exchange for unnatural powers. Unlike elementalists and diviners who use the physical world, the mind and divinity, Warlock infernal powers seem to stem from somewhere else entirely.

Warlocks in Isilendor usually bind their souls to following:
Ifrit, Cat Sith, Hellhounds, Leshen, Treants, Hags, Nymphs, Sprites, Sirens, Dragons and Djinn.

Warlocks of Dungeons and Dragons

Warlock

s featured in the tabletop game, Dungeons and Dragons (DnD), are created by binding their soul to a devil. They are signed over to their patron devil in an infernal contract that is difficult to get out of. By joining forces with a devil, the warlock gains incredible power and astounding abilities. Some who honour their pacts more faithfully can gain extra powers or may be gifted with infernal weaponry and armour.

The Archfey - Warlocks who make a pact with the Feywild. Spirits and faeries of the material plane. Their magic is quite enchanting and vicious at the same time, mirroring the lethal yet hypnotising nature of the Fey.
The Celestial - Warlocks who bind their soul to entities of the upper planes. They are usually bound to serve the celestial to rid the world of fiends and darkness.
The Dark - Warlocks with truly dangerous pacts, usually allied with one of the darkest of entities: Lolth, the spider queen, or other entities of the Underdark. Their powers inflict pain and poison.
The Fiend - The most common Warlock, binding their soul to a devil. Fiend Warlocks powers vary as they are often tricked into the pact. Their pacts often come with cruel conditions and breaking parts of the pact can result in harsh punishment from the devil patron.
The Great Old One - Also known as Star Pact, these Warlocks pact themselves with arcane and alien forces. They have often received their pact through nightmares and rarely know who their patron is.
The Hexblade - Warlocks who forge pacts with entities of the Shadowfell, the dark domain of the goddess Shar. Hexblade Warlocks gain sentient weapons made from materials of the Shadowfell and specialise in shadow magic.
The Undying - A Warlock who pact themselves with an eternal, immortal being.
