Gargoyle in Dungeons and Dragons

Gargoyle

s are quite ferocious despite their taste for minerals. They appear like winged demon statues that are imbued with magic. Gargoyles rarely move, making many doubt their existence. Their lack of movement makes it ideal to surprise opponents that may trespass in their lairs. Quite often their method is to pounce or swoop suddenly on their unsuspecting prey. Gargoyles revel in inflicting pain on others and attack recklessly just for their own enjoyment. Sometimes

Gargoyle

s tortured and toyed with their victims.

Gargoyles were originally added to buildings to act as decorative water spouts or statues. A mage brought the statues to life and they began to multiply and roam the lands. They can speak Common tongue and have their own language. Their horns could also be harvested for potions of flying and potions of invulnerability.

There are some variants to Gargoyles, appearing in different shapes and sizes. These include:

Fire Gargoyle - created by Circle of Four, a villainous group of magic users who infused the magic of fire elementals onto the gargoyles.
Four-armed Gargoyle - as the name suggests, these were terrifying gargoyles with four arms. They were created in the Doomvault by Red Wizards of Thay.
Giant Four-armed Gargoyle - though similar to the Thay variety, the Giant Gargoyle was created by Acererak, a lich who wanted the creature to guard his tombs.
Kapoacinth - underwater gargoyles that used their wings to swim instead of fly. These were known for having lairs in the Sunken City of Ascarle.
Margoyle - a more vicious variety, preferring underground caves and tunnels. Sometimes known for leading packs of gargoyles.

Gargoyle in Elder Scrolls

A version of

Gargoyle

s appear throughout Elder Scrolls video games including Daggerfall, Skyrim and Elder Scrolls Online. They were statues brought to life primarily by vampires or sometimes wizards. The Gargoyles in the video games typically act as stone guards for ancient runes, dungeons and castles. To an unsuspecting adventurer, they can appear as normal, beastly statues and burst to life suddenly.

Most Gargoyles appear as ferocious beasts with gnarled tusks, horns, bat-like wings and stone coloured skin. Gargoyles found in Khajiit communities even bore feline features such as ears and snout.

Vampires are the most common source of Gargoyles, using their blood magic to give life to the statues or summon them into battle. The vampiric Gargoyles are more demonic or bat-like in appearance. Gargoyles of the Coldharbour vampires even seem to resemble Molag Bal, the Daedric Prince who created them.

Gargoyle in World of Legends

Records of

Gargoyle

s are not known in Isilendor but that doesn't mean they don't exist. It's possible statues have remained still for centuries without notice. Gargoyle-like statues do appear on the more gothic and stone structures found around the realms. Delvheim's city capital has statues carved around the palace and near the tunnel entrances. Could be decorative but the ancient dwarves were known for their creative defence measures.
