Ifrit
Real World Mythology
The
Ifrit
is a powerful demon commonly found in Islamic stories. Other variations of spelling include, efreet, afrit or afreet. In Islamic culture, Ifrit
are often linked to the underworld and are sometimes thought to be the spirits of people who have died. In the Quran, Ifrit
are always described as being part of the “jinn” - shapeshifters that often assume the form of an animal, and favour the form of a snake.
Over time, Ifrit
became more like their own thing, seen as powerful demons or spirits who live in lonely places like old ruins and temples. Their real home is believed to be Jahannam, the underworld.
Islamic Folklore
In Islamic folklore, afarit are a type of spirit that lives in the seven layers of the earth. They are often seen as ruthless and wicked, formed out of smoke and fire. Even though, they are usually thought of as bad, afarit are not completely evil. They can sometimes carry out God’s will, even if that results in harsh tasks like seeking revenge for murder. A famous poet, Nizami Ganjavi, tells a tale of an Ifrit that torments a man named Mahan. This Ifrit was created from “God’s wrath” showing that its actions are connected to God’s will. Additonally it is believed that an Ifrit can be controlled by a socerer if they are summoned.

Roleplay Adaptations
One adaptation of the Ifrit is through Live Action Roleplay (LARP). One system, named, Herofest in the United Kingdom has an Ifrit, though spelled Efreet. The Efreet wanted to force its flames onto the lands of Orin Rakatha, and burn everything and everyone within it. Though a deal was struck by the players to allow passage for the Efreet’s flames to enter the lands of Orin Rakatha through the use of its fire mages. All fire mages had to call upon the Efreet’s flame to cast their magic, or could face the Ifrit’s wrath. Such a deal would give the Efreet what they wanted; their flames across the land and to burn people with it, just by choice.
Ifrit
Existence in World of Legends
Hall of Attainment
Extract from "Creatures of Delvheim" rgearding Ifrit:
"Even if Delvheim is known as a cold and snowy realm, it is surprising that it has a good number of fire-related creatures, but none of them is more mythical and mysterious than the ifrit. When it comes to the ifrit, it is very hard to distinguish truth from legend, as the appearances of this entity can be counted on a single hand, but since even Akasuna has a similar being, I think we can consider these legends to be at least close to reality.
Ifrits are spirits of fire that appear as very vaguely humanoid figures engulfed in flames and live around the Delvic volcanic areas. They can control the elemental magic of fire and are a being of such wisdom that it is said they can reveal the future to any who is brave enough to ask. But asking an ifrit is a double-edged sword because they are as voluble as fire and can be easily enraged. And when they do, they can bring great destruction. In ancient times, it is said that at least a couple of villages were completely wiped out of existence because of them and these legends are also one of the reasons why, even if the areas around volcanoes are incredibly fertile, very few people dare to live there."
The Arcane Arts
It is quite an easy assumption to think that Ifrit would have a link to the Arcane Arts. It is also a correct assumption. Those who master fire magic can conjure up an Ifrit sprite among others. Though do keep in mind the rated danger level for the Ifrit, as if you cannot control it, who knows what could happen?
