Mastering Magic
Abjuration
Abjuration: An Introduction
Abjuration
is a subcategory of magical practice that involves defensive spells. Primarily it concerns the creation of shields or wards with the use of spells, in order to defend against attack. Mages that become particularly skilled with
Abjuration
magic are often given the title "Abjurer." It is an incredible feat of magic that often goes under appreciated. Many magic users dream of setting fires or creating blood pacts, but few would survive without the help of wards. In fact, there are many mages that perished in battle due to not using defensive spells. Powerful Abjurers have been recruited into the military and relied upon for dome-shaped wards to defend groups of allies.
Abjuration Spells on World of Legends
Abjuration
is initially introduced during the Arcane Arts course as a basic practice, encouraged for the students' safety. Both the Dark Arts and Divine Arts have their ways of dipping into
Abjuration
. The Divine Arts in particular discusses the idea of protection magic through the Tulen and rituals. The Dark Arts is less recognised for Abjuration, as while you can protect yourself, it usually involves the suffering of someone else.
Here are some known
Abjuration
spells practiced in Isilendor:
- Minor Ward - a simple, beginner level spell to protect against weak magic attacks.
- Elemental Ward - dual casting a ward with an element to create a ward containing properties of that element. A fire ward will set anything ablaze, an earth ward can be hard as rock
- Dome Ward - a ward that covers a small area, it requires dual casting to hold the strength of the ward. This ward can be boosted and strengthened by a group of mages.
- Light Ward - a stronger ward that protects against the dark arts
- Magical Ward - a stronger variant of the basic ward, it can repel as well as block magic attacks
- Physical Ward - a variant of the basic ward which specialises in blocking physical attacks.
- Shadow Aura - a shield of shadows to block attacks.
- Tulen of Lemuria - these Tulen are happy to assist those with good intentions. It is a pure magic filled with light and love.
Abjuration in Other Media
Dungeons and Dragons
Abjuration
is a school of magic that can be pursued by Wizards in the tabletop game, Dungeons and Dragons. It is a magic focused on protective spells, including the creation of barriers against physical or magical attacks. In some instances, abjuration can be used to banish targets to a different plane, helpful when needing to return demons and devils to Hell. Abjuration can protect from evil, bestow curses and remove curses.
Elder Scrolls
In the video game series, players with an interest in magic may find themselves using Abjuration magic. In Skyrim, it is paired with healing magic, under a branch called "restoration". Spells included Lesser Ward, Steadfast Ward and Greater Ward. There was the opportunity to absorb magic power using the Wards. Both Oblivion and Skyrim see Abjuration under the Alteration branch of magic. You can coat yourself with a magical armour or create elemental shields.
Harry Potter
In the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, they teach a number of Abjuration spells for their students. A commonly used spell throughout the series is Expelliarmus, the Disarming Spell, or Protego, the Shield Charm. Protego resembles the Ward spells taught on World of Legends. The famed Patronus Charm would also qualify as an Abjuration spell, used to defend against dark creatures.
