Real World Origins
Vampire
as a mythological being stems from Slavic origins, though the term "Vampire" was not yet used. The word referred to terrifying, bloodthirsty ghosts who terrorized people and spread disease. Another translation depicts Vampires as the devil. These undead beings are dated back to Bulgarian folklore, though stereotypes would suggest Romania.
Knowledge of
Vampire
s began to spread with the rise of the Roman Empire and the story shifted from ghost to undead, walking corpse.
During the 1800s, books emerged from John Polidori and Joseph Sheridan, featuring stylised variants of vampires. John Polidori is the oldest text and the first to present vampires in their most famous portrayal: a handsome, sophisticated gentleman. Joseph Sheridan's version was of a female vampire who preyed on women.
Then, in 1897, Bram Stoker's Dracula reached the shelves, which brought Vampires to the forefront of horror and fantasy stories.
Common themes show in most vampiric stories. They are typically seen as enchantingly beautiful, charming and cunning. Vampires can usually create other vampires through bites and transfusion of their own blood. Vampires can create spawns or thralls out of their victims. They have no reflection, can't be enter homes without invitation and most notably: they can only survive in the dark of night, no sunlight can touch their skin.
Vampires show up in many forms of media. In old books, modern movies and TV shows, or even video games. Their traditions were warped and changed with some modern media stepping back into the classic forms. In many media, there features some form of repellent for Vampires. Garlic, Vervain and Holywater or other symbols of the church. This furthers their connections to the devil.

Mythology in World of Legends
Vampire
s on World of Legends behave a bit differently than the traditional tale. They are not infected by other Vampires, but created by the Night God Tenebria. They originated from the Valley of Despair, which acted as Tenebrias prison for many thousands of years. In the grief that followed, Tenebria wished to recreate a being that replicated his wife, the Moon Goddess, Lemuria.
However, Tenebria's deathly power could not create life, but he could create undead. Vampires formed from his creation; beautiful figures with a thirst for blood.
New vampires are typically formed in the Valley of Despair, whether born or converted. The region is warped by the magic of Lord Tenebria, giving strength to necromancers and undeath. Many vampires still live in the Valley, sometimes hunting those who get lost in the depths. It is not uncommon to see them accompanied by wights, hellhounds or giant spiders.
While Tenebria's attempts were to create great beauties that looked like Lemuria, there were many failed attempts. Vampires in Isilendor manifest in different forms and are difficult to identify. They are difficult to find beyond the mountains of Delvheim, where the Valley is sourced, though they are also known to be fond of the deep, dark forests of Eldathren.
Please note: Vampires are very rare and can only be claimed by players with this status. This can be won through the Knighthood process or purchased. It is not transferable to other users.
