Healing Arts: An Introduction

In modern times,

healing arts

can be considered as a group of therapies that utilise creativity to help people with mental and/or physical health conditions. Many cultures have used creativity for healing purposes, such as painting, drawing, singing and dancing to aide in promoting well-being.

However, for the site, healing arts is the method of helping the sick. For something to be considered part of the Healing Arts, it has to possess physically restorative properties. It should be noted that due to their nature, healing spells can’t be used to reverse transformations, malformations or other changes that have been induced by other magical spells.

Healing Arts on World of Legends

The Healing Arts is split into magical spells and alchemical potions on World of Legends. Of which their can be similar effects on each but can also help users create different builds of characters.

Healing Spells

  • Clotting Spell -
Clotting is the body's way of stopping bleeding by forming plugs in damaged vessels. When natural clotting isn't enough, the Clotting Spell helps by halting both internal and external bleeding.
  • External Regeneration Spell -
The External Regeneration Spell heals external injuries by targeting skin, muscle, and tissue. It doesn’t address internal causes—only visible effects, like rashes.
  • Infection Removal Spell -
Infections are caused by harmful agents that invade the body, often through open wounds. The Infection Removal Spell clears existing infections and adds a temporary protective layer.
  • Internal Regeneration Spell -
The Internal Regeneration Spell heals internal injuries, including damaged organs, unlike the External version. It doesn’t consider the cause of the injury—only the damage itself.
  • Pain Relief Spell -
Pain can interfere with treatment by causing patients to move or become distressed. The Pain Relief Spell removes the sensation of pain (without full numbness).

The Six Tenets of the Healing Arts

Extract taken from A Guide to Healing Magic:

There are certain steps that healers are advised to follow when they initiate a treatment on a patient with Healing Magic. The following six tenets were established by Justus Linnaeus, a healer and mage who is believed to have lived between 1900 OE and 1800 OE. He is considered to be the founder of the healing procedures that are still in use today.

1) Environment Check

- Linnaeus states that before starting the treatment process of a patient, the healer should check the surroundings and make sure that both the healer themselves and the patient is safe. In lots of occasions, the injured patient loses consciousness after receiving their injuries and the source of their injuries may still be around. This can vary from a wild animal to harsh weather conditions.
- The healer may start treatment if the surroundings are deemed safe. Otherwise, the healer has the obligation to take the patient to a safer location while trying to cause the minimal amount of discomfort to them. It is important that the healers ensure their own safeties as well, in order not to increase the amount of casualties..

2) Assessment of the Patient

- According to Linnaeus, the second step of healing a patient is assessing the injuries of the patient. This step is crucial for selecting treatment procedures and should be executed correctly and carefully.
- At the end of their assessment, the healers should have a clear idea of the injuries and be able to draft a course of treatment.

3) Assessment of the Healer

- Linnaeus found the assessment of the healers themselves equally important. Although met with confusion when he first established his six tenets, his thoughts are understood better today now that there is a better understanding of how magic and mana work.
- It should be noted that the healer will not always be in optimal condition. They might have used a good portion of their magical energy prior to treatment and might not have sufficient mana to complete the process of healing. Additionally, some healers might not be very proficient with the healing spells that may need to be used.
- When this is the case the healer should opt to stay safe and not overdo what they are capable of. Linnaeus stated on multiple occasions that if a healer is unable to improve the patient’s condition, then they should at least try not to make it worse.

4) Treatment Plan

- Once the assessments are completed, the healer should move on to establish a treatment plan. Linnaeus underlined the importance of setting priorities in this step, believing that life-threatening factors should be eliminated first.
- This step encompasses everything that will be carried out by the healer.

5) Primary Treatment

- The primary treatment was defined by Linnaeus to be any treatment that will affect the vital functions of the body as well as improve the conditions of the main systems of the patient’s body. The primary treatment should focus on the injuries that are risking the survival chances of the patient.
- According to Linnaeus, the primary treatment should be carried out with care, focus and efficiency, and not with haste.
- Linnaeus categorised the Scanning, Clotting, Internal/External Regeneration, Mending, Overall Healing and Restoration Spells as part of the primary treatment as he believed them to be directly involved with the immediate survival of the patients.

6) Secondary Treatment

- Linnaeus categorised any treatment that is not believed to directly influence the survival of the patient and that is not vital for the patient or their livelihood as secondary treatment.
- In this sense, anything that is done to ensure the comfort and well-being of the patient can be classified as a secondary treatment. Perhaps the best example for this step is the Scar Removal: it is a purely cosmetic process that removes the scar tissue without changing the functions of the vital systems of the body.
