The Desert Habitat

The

Desert

is a prominent feature of the Isilendor landscape. Most notably covering the north eastern portion of the continent. It spans the realm of Akasuna, though bleeds into the northern parts of Braitheld, and the eastern border of Delvheim.

But what is a

Desert

? To answer simply; the Desert is a barren region of sand and dry rock with limited supply of water and vegetation. Desert lands are often very exposed to wind and sun, often spreading the sand and eroding the landscape from years of weather changes.

However, heat is not a primary characteristic of a desert. Cold deserts do exist, as long as they are noted for the dryness of the environment around.

Weather Patterns

Wind and lack of precipitation are key features for deserts. Combined, this typically generates sand storms where the wind churns up loose dust, sand and stones, building a large cloud of particles that can smother, scratch and irritate anyone that comes into contact. Static charge can build within the sand storms, adding fire risk to the already destructive path. It is important to take shelter during a sandstorm, if shelter is hard to come by, digging into the ground and building a temporary den is the best course of action. Use fabric such as scarves and hats to defend against the loose particles.

Flora and Fauna

Deserts are not well known for their flora. When most think of a Desert, they picture succulents and cacti, which are highly valued for their ability to store water in the harsh climate. Crop cycles are not commonly found, however date palms are a well loved fruit, along with some nightshade vegetables such as tomatoes, peppers or eggplant.

Animals do succeed in the desert. Common variety includes snakes, lizards and birds. Camels are used for transport. Rare magical beasts also find their home in the Akashi Desert.

The Akasuna Desert

The Realm of Akasuna is characterised by the unique culture and desert landscape. People who live here are skilled and knowledgeable for surviving in the desert. It is the youngest of the 4 realms, forming out of the rebels that left Eldathren, Delvheim and Braitheld. There is a mixed heritage at the roots and a turbulent, violent history led to establishing the Realm we now know and love.

This is an extract from "Life in the Sea of Bones" by Navarre Elamoira
"The youngest of the great realms, the Empire of Akasuna has a hopeful but ultimately violent history. It has seen the great dreams of freedom challenged by war or strife. The hard and brutal climate of Akasuna’s deserts continue to make it the least populous realm. However, those who grow up and survive the sands are a hardy and diligent people. They have learned to adapt and flourish in lands where life seemed impossible. Despite their troubled past, Akasuna remains a great realm of trade and prosperity for all those peoples whose ancestors made the long journey north."

The Crest of Akasuna takes inspiration from the wonderful land it's built on. The fiery orange field with a blazing sun and radiant succulent boast of the pride of the Desert.
