Pirate

What is a Pirate?

Pirates in fierce combat, swinging between ships

Pirate

s are well known around the world, both in the real world, and here on World of Legends. They play a crucial role in maritime life and emerge in many stories. The concept of

pirate

s has existed for thousands of years but really surged during the 1600s in what is known as "The Golden Age of Piracy."

Pirate

s of this time formed due to the brutal taxes and trade set by Great Britain and Spain. Many folk struggled to get by or purchase basic necessities and piracy was a way to steal from the kingdoms and avoid taxes.

Nowadays,

pirate

s have become popularised in the media and are a fun mode of story telling.

Pirate

s of the Caribbean, Peter Pan, Treasure Island and Blackbeard are just some well known tales of piracy.

Pirates on World of Legends

Isilendor has a long history of piracy, with many pirates still emerging from our players today. Though tensions from Akasuna and Braitheld have long kept

pirate

s bay, making it difficult for them to thrive. Akasuna is home to a famed Pirate Cove that players may visit.

Braitheldean ships set a pirate ship on fire, circa 1190 OE

Pirate Wars of Akasuna and Braitheld

There is a strong history with

pirate

s in the realm of Akasuna. The desert saw a rise in piracy during 1550 Old Era (OE) under the rule of Emperor Taragov. Port cities and hidden caves or coves became home to unofficial trading, and

pirate

ships became more common around the coastal areas. Between 1400 OE and 1200 OE a golden age thrived with piracy. However, they changed direction after conflicts from the Civil War.

Pirate

s made their way south, raiding the coasts of Braitheld instead. They received no attention from the Akashi Emperor at the time and some pirates rose to fame and infamy. Piracy became so prominent that high ranking officials on Akasuna are often rumoured to have relatives from the golden age.

For 200 years,

pirate

s tormented Braitheld but their patience grew thin. Around 1200 OE, the Aloysian Paladins were unleashed on the

pirate

s with no mercy or pardon. It was over 20 years before they removed the

pirate

threat completely and pushed them back to Akasuna. Now they remain in smaller numbers though not gone completely, typically hiding far north.
