Abyssal

Abyssal

Abyssals are a species of sirens living in the deep, cold seas of Delvheim. They are very rare, extremely elusive and deadly, to the point where most information about them comes from lucky sailors who survived an encounter or from washed up siren bodies found on beaches.

Abyssals likely originated from a population of Syrael sirens that left the warmer, shallow Eldathrean sea to move north. There, they adapted to live in the depths of the ocean and their intelligence and abilities regressed to one of mere beasts. Their fin and upper body skin is dark grey, green or, more commonly, blue. They have incredibly sharp teeth and claws, completely blind vestigial eyes and, instead of hair, they have intricate fins with small regions that light up to attract their victims in the darkness. Once a fish has fallen victim to the light lure, it will be devoured within seconds.

Abyssals are solitary and extremely territorial creatures, so academics also believe that another use for their luminescence is to attract other individuals of the same species during mating season. In this brief period of time, abyssals will move in pairs once a mate is secured, but they will quickly reprise their lone lifestyle once the mating succeeds.

Due to their habitat being the bottom of the sea, it is extremely rare for sailors to encounter them, and it usually happens when violent storms displace them and push them to the surface. When this happens, abyssals are known to blindly attack the ships to prey on humans to regain the energies needed to swim back into the depths of the ocean as remaining on the surface too long would mean certain death for these dangerous creatures.
