[Arcane] Arcane Enhancements

Arcane Enhancements

The Arcane Arts touches on many areas of magic but one useful skill is the study of enhancements. This is the art of enhancing magic and other abilities through the means of tools and spells. Talented mages can enhance their strength, speed and even sharpen their senses. The Elements can be incorporated onto the body to boost natural abilities and gems, books or trinkets can be wielded by mages to enhance their own magic.

Tools for Enhancement

Casting frequently and for long durations can tire the mana of even the strongest mages. Understanding the use of channelling tools and enchanting can help enhance magical abilities. This can in turn boost the strength and duration of spells if used right. Below are a few examples of items that can assist a mage in their magical studies.

Grimoires/Books - spell books or grimoires are useful to document magic and strengthen ritualistic magics. A mage can keep a personal grimoire to list frequently used spells and to mark down incantations they discover. Wizards, or scholarly mages more commonly benefit from book magic.

Enchanting - mages that take the time to study or invest in enchanted items can go a long way. Enchanting robes or armour with suitable powers can help to enhance magical abilities. Isilendor offers lessons on Enchanting

Staves/Wands - wielding a staff can aid a mage in channeling their magic. With the right gemstone embedded into the staff, it can enhance certain spells, such as a ruby to enhance fire magic.

Amulets/Talismans - for mages that are not comfortable with staves or wands, amulets and talismans can come in handy. Like the staff, amulets and talismans can bear gemstones or runes to enhance their natural magic.

Element Affinity - if a mage knows their element affinity, they can use that to strengthen their magic. Being in close proximity to their element can allow them to perform stronger magics and be able to rejuvenate their mana more easily.

Boosting Abilities

Magic is not the only thing that can be enhanced. Using the Arcane Arts, a mage can enhance abilities that come less naturally to most beings. There are spells to help one see more clearly in the dark or soften their fall. Some mages can walk across sand or even water without getting stuck or sinking. Here are just a few examples of enhancement spells that can be wielded around Isilendor

Spells listed here are not the only ones that can be cast but act as guides to help find your skill with the elements. You are free to create spells of your own but keep in mind your rank and skill level for realism. A Journeyman is more likely to cast simpler spells while a Hero or Legend may have the strength to cause more damage.

High Jump

By casting great force towards the ground, a mage can push themselves into the air to jump higher than normal. In some cases, powerful aeromancers can manipulate the air to extend this height, giving the appearance of flight.

Featherfalling [Ranger Perk]

Using a similar command of force or air, this spell can cushion the descent of the caster. This allows for larger fall distance. Caution must be taken with this magic as timing is everything and a mistake could mean a fatal fall.

Waterbreathing

A spell to enhance the length of time someone breathes underwater. The duration depends on the caster but the longest known record is 1 hour. There are 2 forms of the spell, largely mastered by hydromancers and aeromancers.

  • Manipulating surrounding water to avoid drowning and lessen water pressure
  • Creating air bubbles to breathe more easily

Surface Striding

This is a set of spells that allows the caster to walk across difficult terrain. The spells vary in difficulty and surfaces to be used on.

  • Sand Strider - enhances the ability to walk across sand without getting stuck or slowed down. The spell becomes more tricky on soft, deep sand.
  • Snow Strider - enhances the ability to walk across snow without getting stuck or slowed down. Can be easier to master on thicker sheets of snow.
  • Ice Strider - enhances the ability to walk across ice with slipping, falling or cracking the ice.
  • Water Strider - The most difficult to perform, allowing the caster to walk on water. Typically only mastered by hydromancers with great practice. This spell performs more smoothly on still surfaces like lake water.

Camouflage

Using this spell, a mage can blend into their surroundings to reduce the chance of being found. This spell works more easily in natural environments such as forests, mountains and deserts. Casting in cities or towns is less likely to work.

Language Translations

Also known as Omnilingualisim, this spell enhances the ability to translate codes or unfamiliar languages. It is a difficult magic to master, typically only seen used by Dreamweavers, Heroes or Legend ranked mages. The spell can activate on written or verbal languages and has the incantation “Telitris, Aia, Idaia”, meaning Tongue, Breath, Word in the ancient Eldalair language.

Note: Language translation cannot be performed with Arcane Arts alone. It requires an aptitude for Divine Arts to combine the inside mind with the physical light and sound in order to fully translate the words and codes.

Enhancing Senses

The senses are a great thing and can become even greater with the arcane arts. Mages can enhance their eyesight to see in the dark or their hearing to listen to sound far away. The following are examples of spells that can be used to enhance sound and visuals to help boost the senses and cast unique magic.

Sound

With magic, a mage can amplify and silence surrounding sounds. They can boost their own voice to speak across a larger distance or manipulate distant sounds to listen to what they should not hear.

Music

A more unique form of sound magic comes in the form of musical magic. Bards or Minstrel mages can enhance their singing or playing abilities to use music for their own spells. There have been known incidents of lute players inflicting physical damage with musical magic and lullabies that caused listeners to fall into unnatural sleeping states. These spells can only be performed by musically gifted mages.

Some Examples include:

  • Lute Lacerations - an aggressive spell that uses lute music to project the sound to inflict physical wounds.
  • Song of Slumber - a soothing sweet song that can put someone into a deep, trance-like sleep.
  • Rallying Drum - often used in battle, a magical drumming that boosts the courage in those who hear it.

Sight

Night’s Eye [Ranger Perk] - a more sustainable magic that helps see more clearly in the dark without a light.

Far Eye - not to be mistaken for the lens for looking at the stars, this spell helps the caster see for great distances. Maximum distance for clear vision is approximately 3 miles or 5 km.

Synaesthesia - this magic makes sound waves appear as light waves of varying colour.

Elemental Incorporation

It is possible for elemental mages to imbue their bodies with the elements to enhance natural abilities. These also act as a cloaking spell to protect the caster. For the majority of mages, it’s best to incorporate their affinity element. Using other elements can risk harming the caster.

  • Earth - enhances defence, spiking up to harm anything it comes into contact with
  • Air - enhances agility and deflects anything that touches it
  • Fire - enhances attack and burns anything it touches
  • Water - enhances endurance and slows movement of anything it comes into contact with
  • Lightning - enhances speed and creates sparks and electrocutes anything it comes in contact with
  • Ice - enhances balanced and freezes anything it comes into contact with
